First Semi-Significant Winter Storm

Well, we couldn’t escape January without at least one storm that would cause issues. I do not think this storm is a big deal, but since we haven’t seen much this year, it’ll feel like a hassle. Snow should begin in the DC-Baltimore area around midnight with accumulations by daybreak approaching 1″ to maybe 2″. It will mix with sleet, then transition to freezing rain. None of this is good news as I have a flight to make in the early morning. As for NJ up through NYC, similar conditions will be experienced. The greatest ice/mix threat will be through central NJ including Ocean and Monmouth counties. Southern NJ will see some light frozen precipitation before changing to rain. Areas further north will see a mainly snow event with some amounts in northeastern PA approaching 4″-6″. I have included some National Weather Service (NWS) accumulation maps below.

Sterling, VA NWS total snowfall forecast valid through 01/21.
Sterling, VA NWS total ice accumulation forecast through 01/21.
Mt. Holly, NJ NWS total snowfall accumulation forecast through 01/21.

After this event, expect another warmup with a rather persistent rainy pattern through mid-week.
